Callow Top’s Journey To Green Energy

Callow Top Holiday Park is now a beacon of green energy, thanks to the completion of our recent solar power installation.

For years, we’ve been committed to reducing our carbon footprint. We had already taken significant steps by introducing energy-efficient LED lighting, featuring motion sensors to minimize energy waste, and installing a ground source heat pump to keep the swimming and paddling pools at the perfect temperature. However, the rising costs of electricity threatened to overshadow our green initiatives. With electricity bills projected to skyrocket by approximately 600%, the urgency to find a sustainable solution became critical.

In November 2022, we applied for a grant from the Green Entrepeneurs Fund through Derbyshire County Council in collaboration with the University of Derby, hoping to enhance our energy strategy with solar power. To our delight, in February 2023, we received a substantial grant of £20,000, which facilitated the installation of an impressive 86.25 kW solar array. This system is capable of generating over 60,000 kWh of clean, green energy annually, significantly reducing our dependence on the grid.

Sue Deane, a partner at Callow Top, reflected on the transformative impact of the grant. “The funding helped persuade all the business partners to make the investment. The economy was very volatile and unpredictable, so this financial help was very much appreciated. Without it, I am sure this investment would not have taken place,” she shared.

With the new solar panels now fully operational, Callow Top has already seen a significant decrease in operating costs. The combination of lower electricity bills and a commitment to sustainability not only improves our bottom line but also enriches our reputation. Guests have taken notice, expressing genuine interest in the park’s green initiatives. “Our customers are showing an interest in our solar installation and our commitment to being greener and cleaner. They are genuinely impressed. This is definitely beneficial for our reputation and will increase our customer base,” Sue explained.

But our journey doesn’t stop there. Inspired by the success of our solar project, we have ambitious plans for the future, including the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging points for both customers and staff. These steps further reflect our dedication to running a carbon-neutral business and serving as a model for eco-friendly practices in the hospitality industry.

As Callow Top Holiday Park continues to embrace green energy, we set a powerful example for both the local community and the tourism sector at large. With each solar panel gleaming in the Derbyshire sun, we’re are not just cutting costs; we are nurturing a vision of a cleaner, greener future, one holiday at a time.
