Are you fit to tow? Safe Caravan Towing Advice

eli : April 16, 2014 3:00 pm : Uncategorized

The Highways Agency is urging drivers to prepare their caravans, and be aware of the potential dangers of towing, as the new holiday season begins.

The team from BBC East Midlands Today visited Callow Top today to talk to our guests about their experiences of towing and film a report for the evening news.

The Highways Agency have released this CCTV coverage of a caravan snaking out of control on the motorway to highlight the potential dangers…

“Although high speed incidents involving towing can be serious, the majority of problems we see on our roads are breakdowns – which can be avoided with routine checks and maintenance” said Highways Agency Service Delivery Manager Andy Withington.
The agency advises drivers to

- carry out a final maintenance check before setting off – particularly if the caravan has been left over the winter
- pay particular attention to the condition and pressure of the tyres on both the towed and towing vehicle
- check that loads in the towed and towing vehicle are secure, that the weight is evenly distributed and is not excessive
- be aware of how towing affects the vehicle’s performance – particularly braking distances
- use extended mirrors when towing caravans to ensure clear and legal visibility of the trailer and of other vehicles on the road
- check they have an appropriate driving licence for the vehicle and trailer combination
- know the correct speed limit for the vehicle and roads
- make sure they have proper breakdown cover in place

“Make sure you have an appropriate towing vehicle, have a correctly loaded caravan or trailer and keep to sensible speeds (especially downhill), and the instability shown in the video is effectively impossible” say Martin Spencer and Ian Hewlett from The Caravan Club and The Camping and Caravanning Club.

Practical Caravan Top 100 Sites Awards 2014

Woohoo – We’re Winners!

We’re delighted to have been voted Regional Winner for the Heart of England area in this year’s awards.

Practical Caravan & Motorhome magazines received 1000s votes for the awards both online and by post. The Heart of England covers the whole of the central part of the UK. It’s one of the most hotly contested regions, with lots of shortlisted parks, so we faced stiff competition.

But that’s not all! – This year there are also separate awards for the Top 10 sites in the country for both caravans and camping. We’re in at number 7 for best caravan sites, number 8 for best motorhome sites but, most exciting of all, is that we’ve reached the number 1 spot in the Top 10 best camping sites in the country.

This is the 7th year we’ve made it into the Top 100 sites and the awards mean a lot to all our staff because they’re voted for by you, our guests, not decided by a panel of judges or experts.

It wouldn’t have been possible without all of you and we’d like to say thank you so much for taking the time to vote for us.
